At Ocean Shores Preschool, the Grand Friends Project celebrates connection across generations. This heartwarming initiative invites older members of our local community—grandparents, elders, and senior friends—to regularly engage with the children through play, storytelling, gardening, art, and shared experiences.

The project fosters meaningful relationships, promotes empathy, and encourages a sense of belonging for all involved. For children, it offers a deeper understanding of care, respect, and the wisdom of our elders. Our Annual Art Show is a joyful celebration of creativity, imagination, and the unique voices of our preschool children. Held each year, this special event showcases a vibrant collection of artworks created by the children throughout their learning journey—ranging from painting and drawing to sculpture, nature-based art, and collaborative projects.

The Art Show not only highlights the creative expression of each child, but also reflects the themes, stories, and cultural connections explored in our curriculum—including elements of nature, community, identity, and First Nations perspectives.

Families, friends, and community members are invited to experience the world through the eyes of our young artists. It's a beautiful way to honour children’s ideas, build their confidence, and celebrate the wonder of early learning.

Connecting Community Through Gardening at Ocean Shores Preschool

At Ocean Shores Preschool, our Community Garden is a vibrant, shared space where children connect with nature, explore sustainability, and experience the joy of growing their own food. This special garden thrives through our strong partnership with the Shara Community Gardens and a dedicated local volunteer group, whose generosity and expertise help bring the space to life.

Each week, we are fortunate to welcome Sigge, a passionate and experienced community gardener, who works alongside the children—sharing his love for plants, soil, and the rhythms of nature. Under Sigge’s guidance, children plant, water, harvest, and care for the garden, developing a deep respect for the environment and an understanding of where food comes from.

Our connection with the Shara Community Gardens extends beyond the garden beds. Together, we share the care of the preschool’s four chickens—our children tend to them during the week, while community garden members care for them on weekends and during school holidays. We also share a garden plot and actively contribute to community garden events and working bees.

More than just a learning environment, our garden is a place of connection, curiosity, and growth—for our children and the wider community alike.

Our preschool community is actively working towards reconciliation through our Reconciliation Action Plan (RAP). Guided by this plan, we are committed to fostering respect, truth-telling, and cultural understanding within our curriculum, community engagement, and everyday practices.

RAP is under construction and updates will be shared as we progress.

At Ocean Shores Preschool, we’re proud to host a vibrant Street Library right at our front gate—a little free library where families and community members can freely borrow and share books. This cozy book nook encourages a love of reading and community connection for children and adults alike.

Our preschoolers get involved by painting and refreshing the library’s exterior as part of their art projects, making it a colorful and welcoming space that reflects their creativity. The Street Library is more than just books—it’s a place where stories, imagination, and friendships grow.
